Consultant and Consultancy Manager

Working in a training and consultancy organisation. They provided technical and management training to customers mainly in the Information Technology industry. I joined the company in 1989 to take over and develop their Project Management training courses. I developed the training products and a set of project management guidelines. I have also delivered in-house customised versions of these courses at customers' sites. I was promoted to consultant co-ordinator in 1992, taking responsibility for the company's full-time and freelance consultants. In July 1994 we re-organised the company giving me responsibility for the delivery of all education products. I was also responsible for the quality system.

The company also markets a PC based training administration package which I was involved in the evaluation and set up of. The company approach to selling resulted in myself and the other consultants being involved in client meetings, proposal writing and presentation.

Major Achievements

Design and implementation of project management guidelines in a multinational company.

Sale and delivery of project management training to a major computer company.

1986 to 1989

Technical Consultant

In a consultancy and training organisation providing all forms of computer training, information centre and communications consultancy, operating system or hardware conversions and systems development. I joined the company when it was first set up, as a Training Consultant providing PC and mainframe training. I then worked as a consultant on operating system conversions from DOS to MVS. The company had contracts in Local Government, Banking and Insurance. Whilst working with the company I was involved in 3 software development projects. The first was the development of an office system running in MVS/TSO developed using ISPF and REXX. The second was a financial management system for schools, developed using Micro Focus Sourcewriter and Cobol Workbench and running under PCDOS. The third was a steel stockholders store control system developed using dBase III. The company also provided personal computing support to a large local authority and this involved me in providing help desk cover for Lotus 123, Displaywrite 4, dBase III and various communication software. The authority used IBM 8100s and a 3090 mainframe and I was involved in the setting up of networks attached to these systems.

Major Achievements

Design and implementation of CAMBIC office system.

Development and delivery of Local Financial Management system for schools, in conjunction with IBM.

1977 to 1986

Local Authority

As a Junior Computer Operator, working a two shift system, on a shift of 3. The shift was responsible for providing computer services on an IBM 370/138 mainframe to the departments within the Council. My duties involved equipment maintenance and support for the communications network. In 1980 I became an Operations Analyst, providing support to development staff in the setting up and operation of new systems. This involved recommending, ordering and installing hardware, writing JCL and operating procedures and support and training of the end user reporting tool Easytrieve. Following the introduction of the IBM Personal Computer to the authority a User Support Section was set up. As I was already providing support for the only piece of end user software I became part of this group. The group became responsible for supporting all personal computing requirements in the County and Database Administration. I provided support for all PC products, IBM STAIRS, DL/1, DISOSS, DOSF, Displaywriter, terminal emulation and communications.

During 1985 Cambridgeshire County Council, IBM and the Department of Trade and Industry worked jointly on an Office Automation Project. I provided personal computing and text database support to the project team and end users. This involved me in Preliminary Surveys, Feasibility Studies and User Requirements Investigations. We then designed and implemented solutions using standard packages with minimal tailoring. Following the project IBM examined their office automation product range and re-designed some of their products.

Major Achievements

Automation of computer operations management information system.

Design and delivery of a careers service matching system.
